Ambulatory Assistance Devices
Power, or electric, wheelchairs have become quite popular among elderly and disabled individuals. Like other objects, power wheelchairs have their advantages and disadvantages.
Obviously, electric wheelchairs are convenient and easy to maneuver. The user controls them. Depending on the model, some wheelchair can be controlled by the mouth or by some other device, but the most common ones employ a joystick. Control by other means other than hands is important for someone who man not have complete utility of their hands.
There are many companies who make these wheelchairs and many venues from where to purchase one. Online stores and mall stores make wheelchairs for people of all ages, sizes, shapes and disabilities. The manufacturer or local stores can customize wheelchairs to fit the user and his needs.
Electric wheelchairs do have their disadvantages, but they can be turned into advantages with the right modifications. These wheelchairs don’t tend to fold up or come apart. That is why the power wheelchair may not be suitable for someone who does not have a large van or travels a lot; they may have to buy a less comfortable collapsible manual wheelchair. There are, however, more expensive power chairs that fold up or disassemble.
However popular electric wheelchairs have become, not everyone can afford one. Many injured, elderly, or otherwise disabled individuals are still without one. Financial incapacity is the biggest deterrent to acquiring a wheelchair. Be sure to speak with your insurance representative or Medicare, since wheelchair use advised by a doctor may be covered partially or even fully.
